When playing a cd in the the cd player of the radio it packs up after about an half hour and the disc jams. There is also a lot of feedback which continues after the radio is switched off to cool down. I have taken the van to the peugeot dealer who has taken the radio out and sent it off to the supplier for a check to see what is wrong. The garage told me that i should not play copied cds as that would invalidate the warranty? As large number of music cds are downloaded from the internet these days - is this right?

I'm sure that whatever it was they said, they were not passing judgement on whether the music you were playing was legally owned by you or not.
Many CD players will play a variety of disks, including Data CDRs and CD-RWs containing a variety of file formats. However, some will not.
I think that what the garage was trying to say is that if you are trying to play a Writeable CD that has been written at home using less than perfect technology, then it may fail to do so and, in trying the read it the Cd Player may have gone a bit nuts and overheated.
Perhaps what they should have asked was "does it exhibit the same behaviour with a shop-bought commercial CD", or is it only doing this with CDs you have created yourself?

For anyone interested, the garage looked at the radio (Road Tested it), decided it was beyond them and sent it back to the suppliers who, after a few weeks, agreed to replace with a new radio cd player. No charge made by the garage. I've yet to test the replacement out.
