Hi David,
We just looked at this question from the opposite direction: Which club should we join for quiet locations? We decided to go with the C.C because we wouldn't be bothered with tents (our thoughts were that tents will bring with them more noise; larger groups camping together, kids, etc.) We spoke with the C&CC at The Great Escape weekend and was told that all of their CSs have to have toilets because of tent campers not having their own facilities. We didn't want to be paying towards these facilities and that turned us away from the C&CC. So in answer to your question, I would think it would cost more to set up and go with the C&CC wereas you "only" need a tap and a drain in your CL with the C.C, this could be a very important factor whereas maybe more traffic through the gates, and so more income with the C&CC. I think if I were in the position it would come down to the proposed location; if trying to attract walkers in a lovely rural area I would think that back-packers may form an important part of the clientel so that would lead me to the C&CC, then again in town I would set up a very simple "Aire" type of CL site catering for motorhomes and caravans . Does that help you at all?

While it may not be strictly in keeping with the rules, most of the CL/CS we have used cater for more than the 5 vans, while they may not advertise the fact more often than not there is sufficient room for more vehicles, taking that into account I'm not sure it would really matter what club you went with, it would be in my opinion more important to market yourself and not leave your future income just to the low level marketing that either of the clubs provide.
I'm also not sure of when and how you can change your licence from a CL/CS to a small campsite but if I were thinking of entering into this very difficult project I would be very interested to find out as I assume its your local council that issue the licence.
Hope that helps and makes some sense

admin issues. Any member of the charity will still be able to use the site (as part of the membership package.
We are in both clubs so it matters not to me which we use, but if running one would select the C&CC.
I think the directory makes it easier to find the small sites.

Thanks for your comments. I note what you say about toilets, but in this case maybe not too much of a problem.
Brian,
It would appear that both organisations have the authority to grant the licence, and it is not necessarily down to the Council. You do have to have Public Liability Insurance plus pay Business Rates, although the sums can be dependant on your revenue I believe.
Reader,
I am interested in your comments regarding admin, as the CC always seem more formal in everything.
In general if you are going to try something it is down to bums on seats as they say, and the C&CC Big book certainly is easy to look through for sites.
Thanks for your comments so far.

Just before the free site went chargeable there was some suggestion that the website owner could some how grant the same rights for a CL/CS as the main clubs, I also believe some of the other clubs e.g. MCC I think its called plus the CSMA both have sites which may be interesting finding out what they have to offer.
Again I really do think its advertising/marketing that will make or break this type of venture, I assume you are looking into it for yourself and if your are I really wish you every success, and if I can be of any help just ask
Brian
Here's a link to the CSMA they have a button to a link "CL Site Inspection form" which appears they can register/licence CL's, don't know how big their membership is but it could be more selective which could possible help. http://www.csmacampi...avanning.co.uk/
Here's a link to the Motro Caravanners Club CL application site

I am also a CSMA member, and their camping section is included as part of the membership, without any extra fee, but I rarely use this facility.
Regarding the C&CC CS's having toilets, the majority still don't. I had never realised that this was part of their criteria and would have thought that it would stop many potential site owners from opening CS's, if it was ever insisted upon.
Thinking laterally, I hope that David is thinking of opening a CL/CS, because we will be touring Scotland next year, hopefully.

One thing about C&CC CS sites is that although they have to have a toilet they don't have to have a chemical disposal point. Another reason to switch to Bio washing liquid/tabs/capsules?

More than a suggestion Brian. A licence was granted by the Secretary of State for the Environment on 13th May.

I think that location is a factor that can influence which club is likely to offer the best solution for you. Where are you & what is nearby, are their shops within walking distance, is their a town/village/beach etc. nearby. If you are looking to get the maximum income then you have to think why anybody would want to come.

Another point is this;
Quote
In my case I'm looking for peace. Peace from others and traffic, and of-course dogs, I haven't turned our paddock into a CL because I figured not many would want the sort of peace and isolation that I enjoy. 15 minutes drive or a bum-numbing cycle ride to the nearest pub/shop but the loveliest drinking-water you've tasted for years, straight off the Presselli Hills via some basic filtering and testing.

What do people want from a CL, cheap-camping next to clay-shoot or cheap-camping on a farm that provides a field with a view ? What is the perfect CL ?
