When we were there around April we stayed on the car park area at the end of the town, there was a sign saying you could park from 8 am until 8 pm. They also provide a parking area near to the old town where you can stay from 8 pm until 10 am. Both of these are free to stay on, we didn't have a problem with this arrangement but we met some British motorhomers who complained at having to move. One guy had a moan that it took him a long time to set up his satelite so it he said he wouldn't stay there anymore.
I talked to a local british motorhomer who said that one of the reasons they had stopped the vans from staying on the beach car park overnight was due to the fact that many were emptying there toilets in the disabled toilets often blocking them up. So it is only us motorhomers who are making them take the measures they have by our own actions.
Personally I didn't mind the arrangement, I take the view if you want to set up camp then go on a campsite, if you want to wild camp (gratis) then you have to be willing to accept whatever rules the locals want to impose. We usually like to move on every few days anyway if we are staying a week or more we would go on a campsite for the conveinence.

Hi, We usually pass through the Mojacar area in January/February when the coastal campsites are usually full. We never overnight in town, we usually stop for a night or two at the Macenis tower carpark. Does this mean that stopping there will be prohibited too?
Hopefully not. Colin
